“The International Ink Art Biennale of Shenzhen” is a standing international art exchange event approved by the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China and Department of Culture Guangdong Province and sponsored by Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government. Aiming at promoting ink art tradition and improving china-foreign art exchange, the biennale has been successfully held in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2013. The biennale is a unique standing international event that focuses on ink art. Since 2001, “Shenzhen Forum for Ink Painting” has been held in odd years. Theme academic seminars titled “20th Century Ink Painting”, “Chinese Painting in the Global Context”, “Ink Painting and Modern Life ‧ Ink Painting and Exhibition Space”, “Leisure and Personal Interests ‧ Chinese Literati and Their Arts”, “Images and Vehicle”, “Lines and Image” and “Ink Art of the Young Generation” were held and anthologies were published. As an important vehicle of Chinese traditional culture, ink painting is still glowing with its special charm in the world of painting. Inheritance or reform of it all shows artists’ concern and respect to this great tradition. Thanks to artists’ various interpretation and expression, ink painting has evolved to one of the most influential art form in our time as an indispensable part of our cultural life. Since the 1980s, ink painting has seen the most prosperous as well as a thought-invoking time in its development. “The International Ink Art Biennale of Shenzhen” and “Shenzhen Forum for Ink Painting” together play a positive role in promoting ink art and exploring how traditional ink painting survive in the contemporary cultural context. With wide attention and praise, the biennale has become a landmark cultural event of Shenzhen.
